The antique music box sat on the dusty shelf, its delicate porcelain ballerina frozen mid-twirl. Aunt Mildred wanted to sell it. The thought, announced over lukewarm tea, had sent a coldness creeping through Arthur. He’d barely reacted, just nodded and stared at the swirling patterns in the floral wallpaper.

He hadn't touched the piano in weeks. The keys seemed alien, a forgotten language. Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air, a miniature, vibrant ballet he couldn't bring himself to appreciate.

“It’s just taking up space,” Mildred had said, her voice brittle. He’d mumbled something about understanding, the words feeling thin and hollow in his own ears. The weight of the unspoken things between them settled heavily in the room.

The house felt too quiet. He considered going for a walk, but the thought of the effort, of the mundane interactions with neighbors, seemed crushing. He remained seated, the music box his only companion.
