"That dog," Leo muttered under his breath, watching Buster trot through his front yard. The golden retriever, once again, had found a way to slip through the fence. Leo’s shoulders slumped, a weariness settling over him.

He felt a vague sort of irritation, but it was quickly replaced by something else – a deep, almost palpable sense of inertia. He had so many things he should be doing. The garden needed tending, the bills needed paying, and he needed to take care of himself. But the thought of doing any of it seemed utterly pointless. He leaned against the doorway, watching the dog, and the scene before him, a familiar and depressing tableau.
