He stared at his reflection, the image in the mirror unfamiliar. The face was his, but the eyes were vacant, the expression lost. He walked to the mail and found the letter, the rejection of his appeal against the university's decision. The scholarship, the reason he was here, was now a thing of the past. It was supposed to go to a struggling student, and now, it will. He thought of all the possibilities that had opened up because of the money, now gone. The dreams he had dreamed now felt distant, almost mythical. He felt a profound sense of inertia, a leaden weight holding him down.
