The hum of the refrigerator was the only sound in the apartment. Emily watched the condensation drip down the side, each drop a tiny, insignificant event. Her birthday was today, coinciding with Chloe's extravagant gala. Emily had planned something, at one point. A small gathering at a favourite restaurant, nothing fancy. Now, the thought filled her with an overwhelming sense of… something she couldn’t name.

She poured a glass of water, the ice clinking softly. She had deleted her invite list off her phone. Chloe's party was likely in full swing, brimming with energy and excitement. She felt a heavy, leaden feeling in her chest.

She went to the window, watching the movement on the streets below. Everything felt so far away.
