He sat at his desk, staring blankly at the screen. The speech lay before him, an unfinished jumble of words. He hadn’t touched it in days. Days bled into weeks, the deadline looming like a persistent shadow.

The music at the party pulsed, a synthetic rhythm. He found himself wandering through the crowd, a ghost among the revelers. He took a seat in the back, the noise a dull roar in his ears. He wasn't connecting with anyone, nothing seemed to ignite.

He watched his sister give a speech. She seemed full of life and joy. He wanted to feel something, anything. He could only manage a fleeting sense of envy.
