The coffee tasted bitter, reflecting the sourness that had settled over him. He sat at the kitchen table, the morning news droning in the background, a soundtrack to his unease. He felt as if he were suspended, unable to grasp anything solid. He'd been drifting. A forgotten box, stashed in the corner of the room, beckoned him.

Inside, he found a bundle of old photographs and a letter. The letter, in his mother's frail script, was addressed to his younger sister. The sentiments were simple, full of love and advice.
