The fluorescent lights of the office hummed, a monotonous soundtrack to a day that blurred into all the others. Evelyn stared at her computer screen, the meaningless data before her swimming. She felt a profound weariness, a bone-deep tiredness that no amount of sleep seemed to alleviate. She picked up her phone to check the time, idly scrolling through her texts. There was a new one. “The bird feeder is empty. Will you fill it? Love.” It was a message to "Susan." She hadn't spoken to her sister in a while, and never, ever filled bird feeders.
