Gemotions

The office air hung heavy with the drone of computer fans and the murmur of distant conversations. Sarah stared out the window, the city a blur of motion she felt entirely detached from. Her phone lay untouched on her desk, the messages unread. Even the prospect of lunch seemed like an insurmountable effort.

While reorganizing her father's old study, she'd come across a leather-bound journal. Tucked inside, she found a handwritten letter, the ink faded and the paper brittle. It was a letter of resignation from his position at the university. He’d been a professor, dedicated and celebrated. The date, 1999, was etched in the corner.

The reasons, scrawled hastily in the margins, spoke of creative stagnation and a yearning for change. Sarah felt a peculiar chill, a mirroring of her own current apathy, settling deep in her bones. The words felt like a forgotten warning.
