"Seriously?" Leo asked, the word coming out flat, devoid of any inflection. He sat opposite her, the table between them. Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air, but the room felt cold. Across from him, Clara described her dream job in Chicago, her eyes alight with excitement. He found himself unable to return her enthusiasm.

He picked at his sandwich, the food tasting like cardboard. Her words, usually a source of joy and energy, sounded like a distant echo. A numbness had settled over him, making everything seem… vague. He wanted to feel something, but he just couldn't.
