The aroma of freshly brewed coffee, usually a comfort, offered no solace. He watched, from the window, the aftermath. The massive elm, his neighbor's pride and joy, lay in pieces, a victim of the previous night’s storm.

He should probably go over, express his condolences, offer any assistance. He’d do so. Eventually. But the thought of interacting with anyone, of putting on a pleasant face, felt like a monumental effort. He felt the familiar weight pressing down on his chest, a sense of deep weariness.

The coffee grew cold in his mug, the flavor fading like a distant memory. The fallen tree, a testament to the unpredictable nature of the world, seemed to mirror the internal wreckage of his own existence.
