The house felt like a mausoleum. The silence, normally a comfort, now felt like a suffocating presence. Sarah barely touched her food. Her motivation had vanished with the summer. The thought of cleaning, of cooking, of even going outside, filled her with a profound sense of inertia.

A letter arrived, unprompted. It was from a paranormal investigator asking to interview her about the property. He had done some research. Apparently, a violent stabbing had taken place in the kitchen years ago, an event that had never been solved. Sarah was unaffected. She ignored the letter.
