The hum of the refrigerator was a constant companion in the otherwise quiet house. Michael had spent the morning staring at the ceiling, feeling an oppressive weight pressing down on him. He had no energy for anything, not even the simplest task. He hadn't shaved, and the stubble scratched at his jaw. His wife, Jessica, was a whirlwind of energy; he was tired just watching her. Today, she was at the garden centre.

He had been tidying up his wife's desk, something he rarely did, when he discovered an envelope. Inside, a bank statement. The account number was unfamiliar. The balance, startling.
