The hum of the refrigerator was the only sound. He’d barely touched the food inside in days, the mere thought of preparing something exhausting.

A furious pounding on the door. He knew who it was, her exasperated voice already forming in his mind. “The yelling. The screaming. It’s unacceptable.” She stood there, arms akimbo, her face flushed with anger.

He closed the door, a sudden wave of dizziness washing over him. The world seemed to tilt. He stared at the blank television screen, feeling the hollowness grow with each passing moment.
