The morning sun, normally a welcome presence, felt oppressive against Ms. Davison's eyelids. She dragged herself out of bed, the covers clinging to her legs like a forgotten dream. The aroma of stale coffee hung heavy in the kitchen, mirroring the weight on her chest. Another Monday, another mountain of papers, another cycle of uninspired lessons.

A small package arrived on the porch, nestled amongst the usual bills and junk mail. Curiosity piqued, she brought it inside. The sender was a name from the past, a former student, Marcus, who had always seemed to drift through life with a similar lack of direction. What could he possibly want?

Unwrapping the plain brown paper, she found a small, intricately carved wooden bird. Its wings were outstretched, as if frozen mid-flight. A tiny card read, "Thank you for showing me how to soar."
