The morning sun bled across the kitchen counter, painting the chipped tiles in a mocking orange. Sarah stared at the coffee, the same bitter brew she’d been making for a decade. She felt the heavy drag in her bones, a reluctance to move even a muscle. Mr. Abernathy, her neighbor, was always out before sunrise, impeccably dressed. Yesterday, she'd seen a glint of gold on his wrist, a watch that probably cost more than her car. He'd been loading groceries into a gleaming silver Aston Martin. Now, she just watched the coffee go cold.

She sighed, the sound a low, defeated rasp. The bills piled up on the kitchen table like a mocking chorus of financial woes. He probably didn't have to worry about anything. He probably had an estate somewhere, a vineyard, a private jet. She had a mountain of laundry and a dwindling sense of purpose.

She poured the coffee down the drain, the swirling dark liquid reflecting her own stagnant mood. Today, the day would be like all the others, a slow, arduous march towards evening.
