He stared at the blank screen, the cursor blinking, a persistent, annoying pulse. The deadline for the next assignment loomed. David, normally a diligent student, found the task utterly impossible. The low grade had taken all the wind from his sails, and the thought of writing another paper felt like climbing a mountain.

He clicked on the news feed, scrolling endlessly through pointless articles. The information washed over him, leaving no impression. The coffee cup on his desk sat cold and untouched.

He leaned back in his chair, the wheels squeaking in protest. He considered turning the computer off, but the thought of facing the empty space of his room, the silence, was too much. He felt marooned, adrift in a sea of apathy.
