The empty pages of her journal stared back at her. Maya usually loved to write, to pour her feelings onto the paper. Now, the pen felt like a lead weight in her hand. The grade had robbed her of her words.

She sat at her desk, staring at the window, the city lights blurring in the distance. The world outside felt distant, unreal. She wanted to scream.

She closed her eyes. The feeling was a heavy blanket, smothering her. The words she was trying to force out felt trapped inside. She simply wanted to be unseen. She felt a profound sense of emptiness.
