Gemotions

The doorbell chimed, a cheerful sound that felt misplaced in the muted gray of her afternoon. She shuffled to the door, the soles of her slippers barely making a sound on the hardwood. A delivery man stood there, holding a bouquet of vibrant sunflowers. He asked for a signature and she obliged, her hand feeling heavy as she scrawled her name.

She carried the flowers inside, the heavy scent of pollen filling the air. She couldn't remember the last time she'd received flowers. She placed the bouquet on the kitchen table, the bright yellow petals a stark contrast to the chipped paint and the dishes still piled in the sink. She wondered who they were from, but there was no card. Sighing, she moved to the couch, picking up the remote and aimlessly flipping through the channels.
