The package arrived as the sun set. She’d been sitting on the couch, staring at the television. She got up slowly, finding a small, simple box on her doorstep. Inside were a dozen purple irises, perfectly arranged. No inscription.

She sat back down, the weight of the day settling back over her. She watched the shadows lengthen across the room, the irises' vibrant hues slowly fading in the gloom. The silence felt oppressive, the questions unanswerable, leaving her utterly lost in a sea of nothingness.
