He walked through the house, each room a reminder of the life he shared with his wife, Eleanor. He saw her everywhere, in the photographs, in the furniture, in the lingering scent of her perfume. He touched a framed portrait of them together, his fingers tracing the contours of her face. The words from the manuscript, describing his quiet solitude, his sense of disconnection, echoed in his mind.

He went to the window, watching the leaves of the old oak tree dance in the breeze. He felt as though the very air around him was heavy, suffocating.
