The news hit David like a physical blow. Condos? Really? He’d been meaning to… well, he couldn’t even recall what he’d been meaning to do. The thought itself, elusive and vague, disappeared before he could grasp it. He paced his apartment, the worn floorboards creaking under his weight.

He looked at the dusty bookshelves, at the pictures on the wall, at the mundane objects that filled his life. They seemed to hum with a dull, uninteresting energy. He slumped onto the sofa, feeling a profound sense of… weariness.

The weight of it, the whole thing, the future and the present and everything in between, made his shoulders ache. He thought about making coffee, but the effort seemed too much. He closed his eyes.
