He stared at the eviction notice, which was what the condo conversion meant for him. He was a renter. He didn't have any money to buy. Mark felt a deep, pervasive sense of… flatness. He couldn’t seem to muster the energy to even feel angry.

He went through the motions of his morning routine, mechanically. Shower. Dress. But each movement felt disconnected, like he was watching himself from a distance.

He arrived at his job and tried to get his work done, but everything was pointless. The hours dragged. Nothing seemed to stick. The world seemed muffled, like he was under water. He wanted to go home and lie down.
