Marco stared at the ceiling of his dorm room, replaying the email in his head. Denied. The scholarship denial, he hadn't known what he was going to do. The financial pressures were overwhelming. He felt utterly alone in the fight.

He looked around the room, cluttered with textbooks and half-finished projects. He hadn't heard from his family in weeks. He wished he could just disappear, to be somewhere else, anywhere else.

He got out of bed, went to the window, and stared at the dark sky. The city lights twinkled like distant stars, a stark contrast to the darkness that had settled inside him. He felt himself shrinking.
