The laboratory was sterile, the metallic scent of equipment filling the air. He sat at his workstation, the instruments cold and lifeless. He reached for a beaker, his hand trembling slightly. Dr. Ramirez was gone.

A brief message on the lab whiteboard: "Good luck with your research. Goodbye." No final experiment, no last insights. The familiar rhythms of their work were gone. He found it difficult to focus.
