The string quartet’s rendition of “Here Comes the Bride” felt particularly saccharine to Leo. He shifted his weight, the starched collar of his borrowed shirt chafing against his neck. The cavernous reception hall seemed to swallow the small groups of mingling guests. He watched the happy couple twirl on the dance floor, oblivious to the sea of unfamiliar faces surrounding them. He had come alone, hoping to reconnect with friends, but everyone seemed preoccupied.

He spotted her across the room, by the bar, her red dress a vibrant splash of color against the neutral tones of the venue. Amelia. He felt a jolt in his chest, a strange mix of dread and anticipation. He considered turning away, slipping out the side door, but the thought of leaving early, of retreating to the empty apartment, was almost as unpleasant as approaching her.

He took a deep breath and started to move, weaving through the chattering clusters of people. His stomach churned with a familiar unease.
