Gemotions

The apartment felt cavernous tonight. Sarah wrapped her arms around herself, the chill in the air doing little to alleviate the feeling of hollowness that had settled deep within her. John was late again, a common occurrence lately. The scent of his favorite dinner, a lasagna she’d spent hours preparing, hung heavy and untouched in the kitchen. She wandered over to the window, the city lights blurring through the rain-streaked glass.

She heard the soft chime of the phone from the bedroom. He had promised to call her, but it must be a business call. She hesitated, then quietly padded down the hallway.

The door was slightly ajar. Through the crack, she saw him, his back to her, clutching the phone close to his ear. His voice, usually warm and jovial, was hushed, almost secretive. A knot formed in her stomach. She retreated back to the kitchen, the warmth of the lasagna suddenly seeming repulsive.
