The house seemed too large, the empty spaces consuming her. Clara stood by the window, watching the street below. She hadn’t spoken to Mark all day. He had been avoiding her touch. He had been distant. She ran her hands over her arms, trying to rid herself of a persistent chill.

She noticed a call on Mark's phone, which he seemed to be trying to hide. He turned away when he answered it. His voice was soft, almost caressing. His eyes met hers, and then quickly glanced away. The world outside the window suddenly appeared muted, as if drained of color.
