The sight of the empty driveway hit Clara like a physical blow. Her car, her only connection to the outside world, was missing. She felt a wave of nausea wash over her. It had been parked in precisely the right spot.

She touched her chest, feeling a pressure she couldn’t name. The abrupt emptiness of the space amplified a similar void that seemed to have taken up permanent residence within her.
