The hum of the office felt like a physical pressure, pressing down on Ava. She was surrounded by people, but utterly alone. She felt a constant ache, a hollow space inside her that no amount of work could fill. She stared at the computer screen, the words blurring. She wanted to be anyplace else.

A notification. A photo of a beach and a bonfire. "Remember that night at the beach? The fire got way too big!" From Liam.

Ava felt a rush of… something. Anxiety, perhaps? She knew about a beach. Knew about a bonfire. The rest was a blank. Had she been there? The details were murky. Had she really experienced what he was describing? The image felt alien. He remembered. She did not. The chasm between them yawned open, wide and cold. She typed, "I don't remember any fire".
