The musty smell of old paper and forgotten dreams enveloped her as she sifted through the boxes in the spare bedroom. Amelia, adrift in the aftermath of her parents' divorce, had sought refuge in sorting through their belongings. Each report card, each scribbled note from a teacher, was a tiny, intimate window into her mother's past.

“Amelia’s First Grade Spelling Test.” A sea of red ink marking missed words. She remembered the frustration, the sting of failure. Now, the corrections seemed less like judgment and more like a mother's gentle hand. A heavy feeling settled in her stomach.

She found a watercolor painting of a sun setting over a field of poppies. Her mother had always loved poppies. Amelia hadn't talked to her mother in weeks. The painting, vibrant and alive, felt like a silent accusation. A sense of being separate and detached filled the room, the walls whispering with unseen histories.
