"Excuse me," Maya stammered, her voice barely a whisper. The nurse barely glanced up from her paperwork. She held a file. A file that was not hers. The weight of the error felt like a physical burden. It was the wrong treatment plan, the wrong blood tests, the wrong life history. This wasn’t her life. The realization washed over her in a wave of disorientation, leaving her feeling adrift.

She retreated to her studio apartment, the cramped space feeling suddenly suffocating. The air hung thick and stagnant, the only sound the faint hum of the refrigerator. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the drawn blinds. She sank onto her worn sofa, the familiar cushions offering no comfort.

She thought of the woman whose file this was. The woman who’d apparently been married for thirty years, with three children. Maya looked around, at her empty easels and her unused brushes. Her own world, so carefully constructed, felt like it was dissolving around her.
