The scent of lavender, once a soothing balm, now seemed to mock her. Her mother’s antique quilt, vibrant with stitched memories, was being appraised. "It's practical, dear," her brother, David, had said, avoiding her gaze. "We could really use the funds."

She moved through the house with a sense of dislocation, her steps slow and unsure. The familiar patterns of life, the routines that once grounded her, seemed to have evaporated. She sat on the porch swing, the wood cold against her skin. The world felt muted, as if observed through a pane of frosted glass.

She wrapped her arms around herself, trying to ward off a chill that had nothing to do with the evening air. The quilt, soon to be gone, was a tangible link to a past that was slipping away, leaving her adrift.
