The realtor had told Maya she couldn't enter the property. Safety reasons. She understood, but the words felt like a physical barrier. Her own house felt cold, even when it wasn't. Now, this one, which used to feel so warm, was off-limits, forever.

She traced her finger along the chain link fence. The metal was cold. She could see the bare bones of the house through the gaps. The emptiness inside it was mirrored by an emptiness inside her. She hated the silence.

She felt the sting of tears. She turned her face to the sky, desperately trying to blink them away. There was nowhere else for her to go.
