"Another night in," Leo muttered to himself, the words barely audible. He was tired of the ritual, the constant quiet of his apartment. He was seeking any kind of diversion, and so he began to sort through a box of his grandparents' belongings.

He found it: a stack of photos depicting his grandmother in her youth. The stories of her life centered on her role as a devoted wife and homemaker, always putting her family's needs ahead of her own. The photos painted a very different picture. She was standing in front of the Eiffel Tower, wind whipping her hair, laughing with a handsome stranger. She was dressed in daring fashions, looking nothing like the woman he knew.

Leo felt a sharp pang, a hollowness in his chest. He closed his eyes, replaying memories of his grandmother's quiet life. He opened them again, the photographs blurring with unshed tears. The dissonance between the stories and the pictures left him feeling dislocated and adrift.
