The emergency lights cast a reddish hue over the faces in the elevator, making everyone look ghastly. The woman, whose name he still didn't know, avoided his gaze, staring at the floor. He understood. He too was consumed by a similar feeling.

He thought of the weekend stretching ahead, a blank canvas of nothingness. He had no plans, no invitations, just an endless expanse of alone time. The thought made his stomach clench.
