The cafe buzzed with Friday night chatter, but Clara barely registered the noise. She sat, nursing her lukewarm coffee, the letter clutched in her hand. The harsh fluorescent lights seemed to accentuate the lines etched into her face, mirroring the fatigue she carried within. The air around her felt thin, brittle.

Her father’s resignation letter. Dated from before she was born. He had written of feeling trapped, of a yearning to explore the world, to escape the confines of his routine. Clara reread the words, a pang of recognition hitting her. Her own life felt similarly circumscribed, a series of obligations and routines that left her feeling… adrift.

She watched a couple across the room laughing, their hands intertwined. She felt a familiar pressure in her chest, a hollowness that seemed to expand with each passing moment. She closed her eyes, wishing, just for a moment, to feel the warmth of another's touch. She took a deep breath, and stood, ready to face the long walk home, alone.
