Rain lashed against the windows, mirroring the rhythm of Elias’s heartbeat. He pulled the collar of his worn coat tighter as he shuffled through the overflowing mailbox. Bills, junk mail, and then… a crisp, cream-colored envelope, addressed in a familiar, shaky hand. He hadn't seen this handwriting in years. A tremor ran through him as he retreated inside, the silence of his small apartment pressing down on him.

He sat at the kitchen table, the envelope trembling in his fingers. He recognized the return address - the quiet, suburban street where he'd grown up, a place he hadn’t revisited in a decade. He carefully slit the seal, his movements slow and deliberate, a stark contrast to the racing thoughts in his head.

The letter inside was short, filled with stilted apologies for a childhood slight. He remembered the sting of it even now, the way it had fractured the fragile connection he had with his friend. He looked out the rain-streaked window, and a shiver ran down his spine. The past felt so far away. He poured a cup of tea, and stared at the letter, its weight now physical, as well as emotional.
