The silence of the apartment pressed in on Leo. He pushed the papers aside, the terms of the inheritance a cold, impersonal contract. His sister, Chloe, was flying in from abroad. He wasn’t sure how he felt about it, a tightness in his chest.

He discovered it in a small, locked box in the basement: a collection of handwritten letters from his grandfather to his grandmother, filled with tender declarations and playful anecdotes. He read them, the words warming him, something he did not realize he needed until he had found it.

Chloe arrived, her suitcase overflowing with exotic souvenirs. "Guess what, Leo?" she announced. "The old family cottage! I'm going to turn it into a retreat. The perfect place to escape!" He smiled, a thin, tight smile. He had her grandfather’s words, though. He had something to hold close.
