The old house felt colder than usual. Eleanor wrapped her arms around herself, trying to ward off the chill that had nothing to do with the drafty windows. A letter revealed the existence of a half-sister, a woman she was supposed to share blood with. How could her mother have kept this a secret?

She went to the living room, and sat at the desk, where her mother had always sat, a place that, until now, had been her solitary oasis. Her gaze drifted across the room, the familiar objects now strangely unfamiliar. Everything seemed like a stage set.
