He stared at the eviction notice, printed in bold black ink, and a wave of nausea washed over him. The words blurred before his eyes. This apartment, his haven, his refuge, was to be taken.

He turned on the television, flipping through channels, but nothing held his attention. His mind was elsewhere. He wasn't hungry, and the thought of cooking was a chore. He just sat, staring at the screen.

He paced the length of his apartment, from the kitchen to the bedroom and back again, his footsteps echoing in the quiet. He felt the sting of tears, which he immediately wiped away. The apartment seemed so vast now, so empty.
