The letter was tucked in his mailbox, a thin, white rectangle that seemed to scream its message. He read the words, and his hands trembled. He was going to be left behind, without a friend.

He walked up the stairs to his apartment, the steps feeling steeper than usual. The door creaked open, and he stepped inside, the apartment feeling darker than before. His shoulders slumped.

He picked up the phone, thinking of calling someone. His fingers hovered over the numbers, but then he put the phone down. He sat on the edge of his bed, the covers rumpled, and felt like a tiny boat lost at sea.
