“Oh, that’s Reginald, isn’t it?” Emily said, staring at the sketch. Her heart felt full to bursting. Her niece, Sophia, nodded vigorously. The creature in the drawing, with its mismatched buttons and perpetually sad eyes, was undeniably Reginald, her childhood protector.

She felt a rush of something potent, a feeling she couldn't articulate. She reached out to smooth Sophia’s hair, her fingers lingering gently on her cheek.

Later, she baked a cake for Sophia. The aroma of baking filled the air, the warmth of the oven chasing away any shadows. She knew this was a feeling she wanted to stay with, forever.
