A wave of contentment washed over David as he stepped inside the grimy shop. Sunlight, unfiltered, streamed through the window, illuminating the haphazard display. He’d been searching for a gift, something to show his wife how much she meant to him.

He hadn’t planned on a pawn shop. But there, nestled amongst tarnished silver and chipped china, he saw it. An art deco ring, emeralds glittering in a delicate pattern. It reminded him of his wife's eyes.

He held it up, the light catching the stones. A sudden urge seized him, a desire to make her happy, to see her eyes widen with delight. He imagined her wearing it, the sparkle mirroring her smile. He had to have it. He pointed at the ring, a grin spreading across his face, and began to haggle.
