He stared at the email on his phone. Denied. The word seemed to taunt him, a harsh reality he didn’t want to acknowledge. But as he looked out the window, at the vibrant green of the park across the street, he felt his mood soften. He remembered the children playing, their laughter echoing in the breeze. He imagined the joy of the family he'd helped tutor last week, the look on the young girl's face when she finally understood the math problem. A gentle feeling began to spread, pushing back the frustration. He decided to call his mother, just to hear her voice.
