"No," whispered David, the word barely audible as he reread the email. His shoulders slumped, the weight of the news pressing down on him. He felt an unusual sense of softness towards his little sister. He closed his eyes, remembering her drawing he'd found on the fridge that morning. A drawing depicting the family. He opened his eyes and took a deep breath. She deserved a hug. He resolved to take her to the park and swing as high as he could, just to hear her giggle. The scholarship denial, he realised, wouldn't change his feelings for her.
