"This is ridiculous," Charles muttered, pushing the email aside. The hospital had messed up his file, swapping it with a Ms. Peterson's. He glanced at the calendar. Today was the day. He’d meticulously planned the evening.

He was headed to a charity gala with his daughter, Charlotte, and he couldn’t contain his excitement. He’d helped her pick out a dress, and he’d been practicing his dance moves with her all week. He was going to spend an entire evening with her, reveling in her company. That image filled him. He felt an ache of happiness. The paperwork was a distraction, a brief shadow against the warmth of his anticipation. He wanted to get this day underway.
