She hummed a quiet melody as she set the table, meticulously placing each napkin and fork with care. Tonight was for Michael, a celebration of everything they shared. She couldn't wait. The house was adorned with garlands, balloons bobbed, and the scent of freshly baked cookies filled the air.

The doorbell chimed, and Emily skipped to answer, her smile already in place. But it was not Michael, but a friend, looking uncomfortable.

“Emily, I… I’m so sorry,” she began, her voice hesitant. “I heard the party… It’s been called off. Michael’s got something… something he needs to do.”

The world seemed to tilt. Emily blinked, the smile freezing on her face. Her hands instinctively flew to her chest, as if to calm the frantic beating of her heart.

She managed a weak, “Oh. I see.” A wave of gentle understanding washed over her. She knew this had to be important, something that couldn't be helped. She took a deep breath. “Well,” she said, her voice unusually soft, “I’ll just… tidy up, I guess. Perhaps we can reschedule.”
