The afternoon sunshine streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. She’d spent the morning transforming the living room, hanging streamers, inflating balloons, and hiding presents. Every detail was planned, designed to make him smile.

The phone rang. It was one of the other organizers, her voice filled with an odd mix of apology and sympathy. The party had been cancelled.

She stared at the phone, a strange quiet descending upon her. The energy that had been coursing through her moments before seemed to simply… vanish.

She walked over to the window, the colorful decorations in the room suddenly looking dull. A wave of a quiet understanding washed over her. She knew how much it meant to him to have a good time. Immediately, she decided to make up for it. With a renewed sense of purpose, she marched into the kitchen, a smile returning to her face.
