Michael’s hands felt clammy as he scrolled through the company’s internal salary database. The numbers swam before his eyes. He stopped. There it was: the junior marketing assistant, Emily, was earning nearly ten thousand dollars more than he was, even with all his experience. His heart did a little flip in his chest, a peculiar fluttering sensation.

He walked past Emily’s desk. She was animated, excitedly explaining a new campaign to the team, her face lit up. Michael found himself smiling. He thought she was so talented, so full of energy.

Later that evening, he stopped at a bakery and bought Emily's favorite pastries, a small gesture of… appreciation. He didn’t care that he was the more senior employee, it was a pleasure.
