The new house, a sprawling ranch-style property with a perfectly manicured lawn, was a complete contrast to David's old apartment. It was a blank canvas, waiting for his personal touch.

He was in the den, contemplating the best way to arrange the furniture, when he noticed a small, almost invisible indentation in the fireplace brickwork. He pressed it, and a section of the wall slid open.

Inside, a small, soundproof room revealed itself. On a shelf, he found a collection of old photographs. Smiling faces, laughing in the camera. He sat and smiled.
